Young Aditha Karikalan Is Rescued After Falling into the Kaveri

Ponniyin Selvan

Young Aditha Karikalan Is Rescued After Falling into the Kaveri is a childhood event whose significance lies in the identity of the rescuer: the salvation attributed to the river goddess Kaveri was, Aniruddha Brahmaraayar later concluded, the work of Mandhakini. The episode links Mandhakini’s unrecorded acts of care to the Chozha family and revises a cherished explanation of Aditha’s survival.

The Fall and Its Accepted Explanation

As Aniruddha recounts the past to Kundhavai, he recalls that people said Mother Kaveri herself had saved the young Aditha after he tumbled into the river. The account preserves the event in the form of a familiar belief, rather than a witnessed description of the fall or rescue: the child survived, but the human agency behind that survival remained unrecognized.

Aniruddha’s Inference

Aniruddha’s suspicion emerged after he returned from Kasi. He had learned that Mandhakini had stayed for several days in Sembian Maadevi’s royal garden, given birth to twins, and sometimes returned secretly to see them. Though he did not press for the children’s identities, the new information gave context to his earlier knowledge of Mandhakini’s presence in the Chozha family’s life. He says that instinct then told him she, rather than the river itself, had saved the child.

Confirmation and Significance

Aniruddha’s deduction is later supported by Arulmozhi Varman, who tells Kundhavai that he reached the same conclusion after meeting Mandhakini in Eelam. The rescue thus becomes more than an explanation for Aditha’s survival: it is evidence of Mandhakini’s quiet intervention in the lives of the royal children, an intervention obscured by secrecy and remembered through a divine attribution. The revelation also connects the brothers’ childhoods to Mandhakini, whose influence had remained largely outside the family’s acknowledged history.
